GeoFieldBook presents itself as a digital tool aimed at supporting structural geology field mapping endeavors, serving either as a supplementary resource or a substitute for traditional paper notebooks and maps. The application leverages the capabilities of the iPad, including GPS, camera, data management, and mapping functionalities, to facilitate the documentation of structural and lithological features. It automates the logging of geo-referenced data, associates images with individual records, and allows for the input of predefined formation names pertinent to different mapping regions.

The recorded data is visualized in real-time against an image base (Apple platform), with strikes and dips accurately oriented and color-coded according to the formation classification. Field measurements and notes can be exported as CSV files, enabling seamless integration with analytical software. Additionally, users can import existing datasets—comprising records and formation lists—into the application.

The current range of supported record types includes (with additional types anticipated):

• Bedding
• Contacts
• Faults
• Joints
• Other (generic entries)
• Up to five user-defined record types, each customizable with five additional fields.

For each record type, data inputs encompass:

• Name (user-defined identifier)
• Location (automatically recorded via GPS)
• Date and time (automatically recorded)
• Dip magnitude and azimuth (as measured in the field)
• Formation name (selectable from a scroll wheel)
• Notes (free-text entry)
• Five customizable user-input fields
